hearing What is the nature of listening?

I agree, ShirleyLuver, this is a really important question. You asked "what is the 'nature' of listening" - I guess the question then, is what are the commonalities between all the forms of listening you mentioned, or what is the stream of similarity?

I agree that there are many forms of listening.I would add to your list listening to the body, and listening to ourselves. As far as this question of what is the same between all of them, I guess I would say that they all have attention within them?

I know its not very good, but it is a start.

What is the nature of listening?

This is a question that has become very interesting to me, as I have explored listening practice more, because I notice listening is constantly changing. It is never just one thing. One moment, listening is listening to another person, and understanding the meaning of their words.

Another moment, it is listening to a person, and letting go of the meaning of their words, to hear something deeper.

Another moment, it is listening to a bird, or the wind, or the sky. It cannot be described

Another moment, it is listening to music. How many different ways are there of listening to music?

It is never just one of these - always, it is a complex mixture of all of these and more. I know that "What is the nature of listening" can not be answered in any kind of absolute and final way - but that it will continue to open and open and open ...
